Kaolinite (/ ˈ k eɪ ə l ɪ n aɪ t /) is a clay mineral, part of the group of industrial minerals, with the chemical composition Al 2 Si 2 O 5 4.It is a layered silie mineral, with one tetrahedral sheet of silica (SiO 4) linked through oxygen atoms to one octahedral sheet of alumina (AlO 6) octahedra. Rocks that are rich in kaolinite are known as kaolin / ˈ k eɪ ə l ɪ n / or china clay.

Kaolin, or 'china clay' as it is commonly called, is a hydrated aluminum silie crystalline mineral formed over many millions of years by the hydrothermal decomposition of granite rocks. Hydrous kaolin is characterized by its fine particle size, platelike or lamellar particle shape and chemical inertness.
The small particle size of the mineral contributes to its white color by stering light. Although kaolin is found throughout the world, deposits with suitable whiteness, viscosity and other favorable characteristics are rare. Ironically, the best deposits are not loed in China.
